A group I stumbled across on the internet, and thought were pretty good. I really like this song. I just wish their CDs were easier to get hold of over here.

In Harm's Way - Fin Fang Foom
It's a sad song that's a little like Reuben during their quieter moments. I love the piano running through this song.

I'm also listening to lots of http://www.defconradio.com, and the original Three Lions by Baddiel & Skinner and the Lightning Seeds. Undoubtedly the best football song ever.

Anything, really. All I have are the freebies off their site, but it looks like I can import a couple of albums using eBay or Amazon. It just seems a little crazy to be importing German CDs to the UK from the States.

I was listening to Nsurgnie and Merik last night on RKOL as they filled in for PVA, and Nic played something by Stephen Speaks. I immediately had to aquire everything by this man that I could find....

...and dear GODS, is he amazing. Such beautiful songwriting, such a voice....*sighs dreamily and listens to the entire folder of songs over again*

They're now called People In Planes, and the album fits somewhere between Radiohead and the Killers. Good stuff.

I also just bought Frances the Mute by the Mars Volta, which I also like.

Muse's new album "Black Holes and Revelations".

I wanted to be able to say that they had just sold out to the forces of corporate greed - as the Chili Peppers did with their distinctly content-lacking new album - but the sound has me hooked. Dammit.

Supermassive Black Hole seems a lot more Radioheady than Muse used to be. But it's a neater sound, I think.

Last Day of Winter, by Pelican, which is an awesome instrumental song by an awesome instrumental band.
The Greatest Hits of Deep Purple, which I snagged from my dad's CDs. They're a huge amount better instrumentally than I was expecting. It's almost prog rock at times.

Deep Purple ranks as one of my favourite bands of all time. And, on that album in particular, there are very few mediocre songs.

PFR, that's too funny. That song is constantly getting stuck in my head. I have a friend who D.J.'s at bars and every time I am where he is, he plays it just to bust my balls and drive me insane. hehe

Errm, on topic ...

I'm listening to Bob Odenkirk.

Thank you, now it's in my head. That song is a virus!

Speaking of folk music, I'm listening to Sufjan Stevens's album (Greetings From) Michigan right now. I'm not sure if I'm quite as fond of it as I am of Illinois, but it's still pretty nice.

I'm listening to Grace Valhalla, who caught my eye on Jamendo.com. She's a French electropop composer, and her music's really relaxing. I love Apricot Hill and Ungrateful Men in particular.

I've been playing No Time Flat by Kevin Devine over and over again too. It's pretty catchy.

I've also been going through The Cooper Temple Clause's two albums whilst I wait for their long overdue third to be released. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

I also recently discovered Taraf de Haïdouks - they play gypsy folk music and most of their album (Band of Gypsies) is instrumental. But they are so damn impressive technically... and something keeps drawing me back to their sound, which is really hard to describe. I particularly like "A La Turk", "Return of the Magic Horses" and "Carolina".

Continuing with the folk music theme, if you prefer something a little less manic, I highly recommend another recent discovery of mine: Projection Latine's album called "Evasion". This is a South American band who again are totally instrumental. They play some sort of pipe or flute - and the sound is very smooth and relaxing.

If, however, you want something that might be a little more recognisably close to today's pop scene, I'd recommend The Levellers and, in particular, their album "Levelling the Land". They are basically doing jazzed-up light-hearted Irish-folk-song-style music. Good stuff.

And please keep this thread alive... apart from anything else, I'm going through a music-gathering phase at the moment and I need pointers on where to find the good stuff!

Now I'm onto Low Place Like Home by the Sneaker Pimps. I like it, and the same for Spin Spin Sugar and Post-Modern Sleaze as well. They're a bit like a more futuristic Garbage, only less guitar-focused. The singer a kind of nice, smooth, quietly evil voice that gives it some atmosphere.

I also keep hitting up a couple of Myspace sites, namely Shiny Toy Guns to listen to Don't Cry Out, which I really like. Zane Lowe was talking up the Hours on the radio, which I listened to for the first time in months a week or so back so I checked them out too - Like Ali in the Jungle is decent, but not amazing.

My friends at school have been playing the hell out of Steady as She Goes by the Raconteurs, so much so that I'm really starting to dislike it. It's pretty overrated if you ask me.

I've been freakin' hooked on Led Zeppelin as of late...I've always enjoyed their stuff ever since I first listened to Stairway to Heaven. Then I bought Led Zeppelin IV. I didn't like everything straight away but now? I think it's a masterpiece. Every song has something special about it, StH is just the tip of the huge iceberg of talent in those guys...Sheesh...

So it's The Battle of Evermore by Led Zep right now. But it could as well be Kashmir, When the Levee Breaks, Black Dog, Dazed and Confused...The list goes on. I love Led Zep.

On the subject of "places to browse music," may I recommend the Live Music Archive? Tons of freely-available MP3s of concert bootlegs from many, many bands, most of which I've never heard of. I just downloaded a huge chunk of live Moxy Fruvous from them so that I can listen to it and regret never getting to attend a Fruvous show myself...

Try Rebellion In Dreamland, Dethrone Tyranny, Anywhere In The Galaxy, Damn The Machine

For albums I suggest any of their last 5, they're all pretty consistent.

Here are some other bands I love, all of them being power/powerish, with some thrash metal (a few favorites underlined):

Agent Steel, Anthrax, Astral Doors, Avantasia, Beyond Fear, Black Sabbath (Especially from the Dio and Tony Martin eras, Sabbath made some of their best stuff without Ozzy :) ), Blaze, Blind Guardian, Candlemass, Cellador, Demons & Wizards, Bruce Dickinson, Dio, Dragonforce, Dragonland, Dream Evil, Edguy, Falconer, Firewind, Gamma Ray, Halford, Hammerfall, Hibria, Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, Iron Savior, Judas Priest, Manowar, Manticora, Marty Friedman, Megadeth Metallica, Nostradameus, Persuader, Rainbow, Savage Circus, Saxon, Slayer, Sonata Arctica, Steel Attack, and Stratovarius.

Some obvious bands in there, but this was a copy/paste. Most of those bands are on iTunes, and you can hear samples if you go to their store. I never buy from there, but it's a handy resource to hear a band's sound.
