Sweet Nutcrackers... (and general trading tips)

Postby Tichondrius on Sat Aug 26, 2006 8:58 pm

So, they've been on the rise as of late. I need some opinions from you big time market moguls. Price Spike or definitive rise? Which would be more profitable, selling now and investing in something else or keep waiting for a further rise? I fear for a quick drop soon...

I have a single one. Bought for 3.5 Million back in some crazy sale. They're currently 11 Mill. Funny thing is there's this dude with 21 of 'em in the mall who just keeps raising his prices and apparently controlling the market.

I think its weird that they're that high. The only reason to buy one would be collectability, its not that great of a familiar. All it does is attack like a pickle (no de leveling) and give you not so great buffs for X turns (X=weight/3). Although it can buff you while you fight the sorceress. I'm very curious why they're being bought up, too. Mainly because I want one eventually :/

Well there's always lots of familiar collectors that will eventually want one of these. Happens with every FotM, and the Nutcracker, for the reasons you stated above is likely to exist in smaller numbers than other, more useful FotM. I suspect the Comma Chameleon will become another of these cases. For reference look at Hand Turkeys.

You sell, prices go down. Do you buy back?
You sell, prices go up do you kick yourself?

Don't sell prices go down, oh well they'll go back up.
Don't sell and prices go upp, w00t naggits.

The question you need to ask is,"Do you need meat right now?"

Yeah, I think the real question is "do you need meat now, for investments or other stuff, or do you want maximum value for the familiar, period?" The Nutcracker will surely keep going up over time, even if this is just a price spike, so if you can afford to hang on for it for months, you'll see better prices in time. On the other hand, about 7.5 mil in profits is nice for a splurge purchase, so if you want to turn your Nutcracker into a Mr. A or three, now might be the time.

I hope this is only a spike, otherwise I'll be kicking myself later for not buying one now or earlier. The nutcracker is one of the familiars I put off of buying think it wouldn't go up past 10 million within a year. Ah well, that's life

Blarg, speaking of spikes, look at doppleshifters. A week ago they were at 7 million. Now they're at 13 million.

This is a result of the PvP change, right? This may be a temporary thing, depending on if the "omg doppels best for PvP" thing holds.

What PvP change made the Dopshifter useful?

Familiar level is now what is counted with kill deciding a tie. So buffs and such make a difference.

And because the Doppleshifter's familiar item is +15lbs it can get the highest weight.

Yep. It's annoying because I was deciding on either that, a March Hare, or Hobo Spirit. If I were out of hardcore sooner I'd have gotten all 3 after liquidating some other assets. Since I'm HC, though, Tichondrius was nice enough to buy the Hobo for me while I'm in HC, with my liquid meat. Now I see that I should have had him by the Dopshifter :/. Oh well, at least I saved 500k+ on the hobo.

Do a litle buy low sell high, if you have about 10million to work with you can get to 15 in a week or two of hard /trade hawking.

Not in hardcore I can't ^^

After I grab the last of the plexiglass gear (2 more runs) and then the stainless steel solitaire, just so I have the last of the 'best' rollover set, I plan to stay in softcore a while and build up some cash and finish off my familiar collection. Well, hopefully finish off >_>. Not sure how long it will take to make the billion or so meat necessary to get the turkey, jill-o-lantern, crimbo elf, feather boa, baby yeti, coffee sprite, squid, raincloud, and dodecapede. I hope to have them all by this time next year though, at least.

Not in hardcore I can't ^^

1. Create a multi

2. Send it enough stuff to get it to level 7

3. Give away *everything* the multi possesses (don't give it to yourself)

4. *Never* adventure the multi ever again (except basement or gym)

You now have a bona fide trading multi whose only possessions are your possessions. You can send them back and forth with impunity, as long as the above conditions (especially 4) are *always* met. Otherwise, you'll get done for multi abuse.

Even Fusilliban has one of these mall multis, so they are definitely approved-of by the establishment. As long as you stick within the rules. If you have any further queries, I sugest you kmail #6.

If you want a very simple style of investments, just use items of the month, which will inevitably rise in price. IE, buy 3 of them, and they will inevitably go up in price enough to where you can sell them and buy 4 IotMs in a month or two, depending on how hot the item is. Then repeat. Once you start accumulating many of one, rather than selling them a month or two later, hang on to them, and wait for their value to skyrocket once supply dwindles. That tends to be the most useful with useful IotMs (things that more than collectors would buy, like the tome of snowcone summoning)

Then you can pick other investments too, once you get enough money to play around with. Don't expect to make quick cash necessarily, but if you hang onto your meat, and keep it all invested, your gains will compound nicely.

Also, when you're looking to buy something, barter around in trade first, rather than going straight to the mall to buy it. Sometimes you can save 100K or so, or more even.

A good rule of thumb when trading is this: the less often an item is traded, the more discount you should ask for in /trade.

Also, the old 'buy low sell high' applies.

Also, try not to deal with discountinued items that have no use. Gasmasks, demonskin trousers, all of the containers, and probably others that I'm not thinking of.

Nah, if he were to do something like that, he would have to create another Hagnk's. Call it the "trading sack" for now.

What could go into the sack?
- Any item you have in Hagnk's / DC / Store / inventory
- Anything you buy in the mall in Ronin / Hardcore
- The contents of any gift package you open in Ronin / Hardcore
- Anything you might receive as part of a trade offer while in Ronin / Hardcore

What could go out of the sack while you are in Ronin / Hardcore?
- Anything you might send as part of a trade offer, while in Ronin / Hardcore
- Anything you might want to send in a gift package
- Anything you want to put in your mall store / DC

And, of course, there would be an "empty trading sack into your inventory" button once you were out of Ronin / Hardcore.

Does that look like a lot of coding to you? Because it does to me... and that's probably why it hasn't been implemented yet...
